- 1831 – The Elizabethtown and Somerville Railroad is incorporated in New Jersey.[1]
- 1865 – The Colorado and Clear Creek Railroad, later to become the Colorado Central Railroad in 1868, is chartered in Colorado to build a standard gauge railroad up Clear Creek Canyon to Central City and other mining centers, as well as to connect to nearby Denver and Boulder.
- 1891 – The Arkansas and Missouri Railroad, previously purchased at foreclosure in October 1890, is deeded to St. Louis Southwestern Railway.[2]
- 1918 – The organization of the United States Railroad Administration is announced in Washington, D.C., naming William G. McAdoo as Director General.[3]
- 2003 – A northbound Canadian National Railway train derails (pictured) due to a cracked rail joint near Tamaroa, Illinois, releasing hazardous materials, some of which ignite; about 850 people are evacuated from a 3-mile radius of the accident site.[4]
