- 1880 – The Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway, a subsidiary of Grand Trunk Railway, completes construction of its line between Chicago and Valparaiso, Indiana.[1]
- 1886 – The Kansas Midland Railway, a predecessor of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, is incorporated in Kansas.[2]
- 1905 – Jay Cooke, financier of Northern Pacific Railway, dies (b. 1820).
