- 1835 – The Buffalo and Mississippi Railroad, a predecessor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, is incorporated in Indiana.[1][2]
- 1837 – The Buffalo and Mississippi Railroad is reorganized as the Northern Indiana Railroad.[1][2]
- 1859 – The North Missouri Railroad, a predecessor of the Wabash Railroad, opens the first division connecting St. Louis to St. Charles, Missouri.[3]
- 1903 – Based on maps created by Arthur Keddie's makeshift survey parties, Walter J. Bartnett meets with George Jay Gould I and the two sign an agreement forming what will become the Western Pacific Railroad.[4]
