- 1827 – The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is chartered as the first freight common carrier railroad in the United States.[1]
- 1867 – The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad is chartered in Maine.[2]
- 1893 – The first freight train to travel the length of the newly constructed transcontinental line of Great Northern Railway arrives in Seattle, Washington.[3]
- 1898 – The Temple Street Cable Railway in Los Angeles, California, is sold under foreclosure.[4]
- 1903 – United States President Theodore Roosevelt signs a bill authorizing the construction of Union Station in Washington, D.C.[5]
