- 1847 – The Rock Island and La Salle Railroad, a predecessor of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, is incorporated in Illinois.
- 1854 – The Alexandria and Washington Railroad is chartered in Virginia to build from the south end of the Long Bridge (14th Street Bridge) over the Potomac River south to Alexandria.
- 1961 – Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad takes control of the Ann Arbor Railroad in Michigan.[1]
