- 1880 – The Tawas and Bay County Railroad in Michigan purchases the Lake Huron and Southwestern Railway.[1]
- 1885 – The Kansas City, Clinton and Springfield Railway, a predecessor of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf Railway, is incorporated in Kansas.[2]
- 1897 – The Citizens Traction Company, a predecessor of the San Diego Electric Railway in California, enters receivership.
- 1933 – Pennsylvania Railroad's electrification of what will become the Northeast Corridor reaches Wilmington, Delaware, from New York City.
