- 1859 – The Atchison and Pike's Peak Railroad, a predecessor of the Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad, is organized in Kansas.[1]
- 1868 – The Columbus and Indiana Central Railway and the Chicago and Great Eastern Railway merge to form the Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central Railway connecting Chicago to Columbus, Ohio under one railroad company.[2]
- 1869 – The Cleveland and Toledo Railroad is merged into the Lake Shore Railway, a predecessor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway.[3]
- 1943 – Stuart R. Knott, president of Kansas City Southern Railway 1900-1905, dies (b. 1859).[4]
- 1954 – The RDCs making up Santa Fe train number 81, the San Diegan, collide with an automobile in Encinitas, California.
