- 1879 – The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railway begins regular freight operations.[1]
- 1885 – The original Florida Midland Railway is incorporated to connect Lake Jessup to Leesburg.
- 1885 – The Kansas City, Clinton and Springfield Railway, a predecessor of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis Railroad, is incorporated in Missouri.[2]
- 1935 – Pennsylvania Railroad begins regular revenue service using electric locomotives on what will become the Northeast Corridor between New York City and Washington, D.C.
