- 1933 – The San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway is incorporated and assumes all operations of the San Diego and Arizona Railway.
- 1968 – Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad merge to form Penn Central Transportation.
- 1979 – Southern Railway discontinues its passenger train services, transferring the operating responsibilities of the Crescent to Amtrak.
- 1981 – Amtrak discontinues the Panama Limited passenger train service in favor of the City of New Orleans on the same route.
- 1995 – Amtrak discontinues the Palmetto passenger train service between New York City and Tampa, Florida.
