- 1873 – The first section of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway is opened between Topeka, Kansas, and the Colorado/Kansas border.
- 1893 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway enters receivership three days after the railroad's chairman, George C. Magoun, died.
- 2001 – An incorrect brake application on a CSX local train that had stopped to perform switching at Kodak Park (Charlotte, New York) causes the train to run away and derail five miles later, destroying homes and businesses in the area.
