PRR E44

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

The E44 was an electric, rectifier-equipped locomotive built by GE for the Pennsylvania Railroad between 1960 and 1963. Based on the earlier E33's built for the Viginian RR, they had 4,400 horsepower and were geared for 70 mph. Because of this low speed, they were rarely used for passenger service.

After the Penn Central merger, The E44's remained in freight service, and eventually passed to Conrail. Conrail was not nearly as enthusiastic as the PRR or PC, and abandoned their electric locomotives, such as the E33 and E40 in the early 1980s. They were acquired mostly by Amtrak, although a few went to NJ Transit. They were replaced on both railroads by the AEM-7. Amtrak #502 (PRR & PC #4465) is preserved at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, restored to its PRR paint.
