Evidence of the Northern Pacific still exists in the Bismarck-Mandan area, such as: The NP's first crossing of the Missouri River; Five preserved NP depots: Mandan, Bismarck, Sterling, Wilton, and New Salem within twenty-five miles of Mandan; NP Class Q-3 Pacific, No. 2164 on display in Bismarck. The convention hotel is located just north and west of exit 152 in Mandan, with a panoramic view of the Missouri Valley. It is one-half mile from the North Dakota State Railroad Museum, and within easy distance of the former Northern Pacific facilities in Mandan.

Mandan was a key facility on the Northern Pacific. Located just across the Missouri River bridge from Bismarck, Mandan was for many years a division point on the NP. The Mandan North Branch to Killdeer and the Mandan South Branch to Mott originated here. The North Branch, which now extends only to Zap, remains an active line, and actually added a major shipper in the past year.

The main line west of Mandan enters the Heart River Valley and begins its climb over the badlands of western North Dakota on its way to the Yellowstone River at Glendive. The NP's Class Z-5 Yellowstones were developed specifically to maintain train tonnage on this surprisingly rugged division. The NP operated a large steam locomotive servicing facility at Mandan, as well as a car shop and track maintenance facilities. Today, the railroad yard has an active car shop and track maintenance facility, but locomotive servicing is limited to fueling and sanding the coal and other traffic passing through.
