Fox River Trolley Museum
The Fox River Trolley Museum is located at 361 South LaFox Street, South Elgin, Illinois. The Museum grounds are two blocks south of the intersection of LaFox and State Street.
The Fox River Trolley Museum operates a variety of antique electric trolley cars from many long vanished electric railroad lines. Visitors can board an antique electric trolley at the Museum’s South Elgin depot—Castlemuir—and take a four mile round trip ride along the banks of the scenic Fox River (Illinois, USA) to the Jon J. Duerr (Blackhawk) Forest Preserve. The Museum’s trolleys run over the remaining old time interurban trolley tracks of the Aurora, Elgin and Fox River Electric Company (AE&FRE). This interurban at one time connected the communities of Carpentersville, West Dundee, East Dundee, Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, North Aurora, Aurora, Montgomery and Yorkville.
The Museum has over 30 antique electric trolleys and railroad cars in its collection. The cars range in construction dates from 1887 to 1959. One of the most exceptional cars in the collection is Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad car 20-- constructed in 1902-- and today, the oldest operating electric interurban car in the United States.
The Museum operates its trolleys every Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., from Mother's Day to the first Sunday in November. In July and August, the Museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Fox River Trolley Museum, operated by the Fox River Trolley Association, is an Educational, Member based 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Illinois Not-for-Profit Corporation. The Museum gratefully accepts donations to support its operations, exhibits, programs, research, preservation and public interpretation.
