East Kowloon Line (MTR)

East Kowloon Line (東九龍綫) was one of the original five MTR lines proposed in the late 1970s in Hong Kong, which connects Sheung Wan with East Kowloon, and subsequently extended to Sha Tin. However, the plan never came into fruition as the population of the areas in East Kowloon, namely, Ma Tau Wai, To Kwa Wan, Hung Hom, showed signs of declining and it was deemed no longer feasible to build such a line. The link to Sha Tin was provided by electrifying the existing Kowloon-Canton Railway British Section (now KCR East Rail). Furthermore, the relocation of the Kai Tak Airport to a new one at Chek Lap Kok in the mid-1990s has literally knocked a devastating blow to the project.
The route of the planning Sha Tin to Central Link roughly follows the East Kowloon Line proposal.
