Dudbrook Town station is situated in Dudbrook, Devon, England. It is operated by the Apple Tree railway which is a restored section of the Hayles-Wayworth-On-Sea branch line, known as the Apple Tree Railway.
History
The station was built in 1959, and opened in 1960 as a station on part of the Hayles-Wayworth-on-Sea line. In 1980 it was converted to standard gauge. During world war two the line played a part in evacuations. Trains stopped at Dudbrook station, and children were taken via there to there foster parents. After a derailment of trucks, the station was closed by BR in 1963.
Preservation
The Apple Tree Railway society was set up in 1986, and Dudbrook was the first station restored by the society. In 1989 the Apple Tree Railway society opened track from Dudbrook to Churchdown. This new heritage line was called the Apple Tree railway. Dudbrook has grown since then, and is now a large station with a work shop, yard and shed built in to the cliff that overlooks the site.
Dudbrook "Makeover"
Dudbrook is still being improved by the Apple Tree Railway society. Since the extention of the line to Wayworth-on-Sea in April 2008 the station has been to small for the heritage railway. So there is a project going on that is upgrading Dudbrook. Already a better siding has been installed with three roads, new platforms are planned, and therefore wooden ones are in place at the moment. Also, a new signal box and a third line were installed in 2008. A new station building is being planned and the project may be ready by 2010.
