Black, Hawthorn & Company were a steam locomotive builder with a works situated in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear.

In 1865, following the collapse of locomotive builders R. Coulthard and Company, William Black and Thomas Hawthorn formed a partnership to supply steam locomotives to collieries and works, particularly in the North East of England.

In 1902 the company was purchased by fellow locomotive builders R & W Hawthorn Leslie & Company of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Much of the production was based on four-coupled and six-coupled Saddle Tank designs, some of the locomotives being very long-lived.
