The Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad was formed out of a merger between the Wills Valley Railroad and the North East and South West Alabama Railroad in 1868. It was originally to run 293 mi (472 km) from Meridian, Mississippi, to Chattanooga, Tennessee, but only about 230 mi (370 km) had been completed when it was reorganized into the Alabama Great Southern Railroad in 1877.
