- January 7 – Passenger service is discontinued on the Palace Gates Line in London.
- January 23 – One of the largest strikes against an American railroad begins as a result of the Florida East Coast Railway's refusal to work with as many as 27 different unions on wage issues.[1]

- February 3 – Florida East Coast Railway operates the first train with a supervisory crew during the strike that began on January 23.[1]
