19th century
- 1830 – Construction begins on the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company, which is now part of Norfolk Southern Railway.
- 1871 – The government of Victoria, Australia, reopens Essendon railway station, Melbourne, for service.[1]
- 1882 – The first train from Cincinnati, Ohio, on the Cincinnati Northern Railway, departs for Dayton, Ohio.
- 1899 – Hull Electric purchases the Aylmer-Hull, Quebec line which it had been operating under a lease agreement from Canadian Pacific Railroad.[2]
20th century
- 1911 – A snowstorm deposits more than nine feet of snow on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, halting rail traffic on the Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad.[3]
- 1916 – Pennsylvania Railroad suspends its Federal Express passenger train service due to freight congestion on the New Haven Railroad.
- 1962 – British Rail Class 42 locomotive D859 Vanquisher enters service.
- 1985 – The Kitakyushu monorail in Japan opens between the present Heiwadori and Kikugaoka stations.
- 1999 – A man climbs over a safety barrier at Sakudaira Station on the Nagano Shinkansen line in Japan and is hit by a non-stop service in a suicide attempt.
21st century
- 2003 – Following its purchase of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and its subsidiaries, operations begin on the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway in New England, Quebec and New Brunswick.[4]
