Defined Mechanism Needed

The current mechanism for displaying Breaking News is not user-friendly.

I think we need a new template that displays either a sub-page containing the current breaking news or this default template (when there is no news). Only the sub-page would be accessible to non-sysops. There would need to be an 'edit' link on the Main Page pane too, to open the sub-page for editing. (This also applies to any other Main Page template that is to be editable!)

I'm not sure whether it would be possible for the new main-page template to switch the display just according to the content of the sub-page. (ie - can the new template determine if the sub-page is blank and thus switch to the default display?) If not, then when someone archived the breaking news, they would have to restore the default template manually.

Does this make sense? Is it workable? Volunteers to implement?

I will see what I can do templates wise: there is still quite a bit of work to do on them, to make the main page fully functional, but oweing to recent vandalism, we have fuly protected it, and the templates are now semi-protected (but that should'nt be a problem!)
If anyone else can do anything, then please let us know!
