Himsagar Express

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

Himsagar Express is the longest running train on Indian Railways in terms of distance and time. It runs from the city of Kanyakumari in India's southernmost state, Tamil Nadu to the city of Jammu, in Jammu & Kashmir – the northernmost state of India. During its almost 75-hour run, it covers a distance of 3751km, and transverses nine of India's states halting at a total of 77 stations. It runs weekly, starting every Friday at 14:05 from Kanyakumari, reaching Jammu on Mondays at 15:10. It returns from Jammu on Mondays at 23:15 and reaches back at Kanyakumari on Fridays 00:55. Because of this schedule, it needs just one rake to complete its entire run.

The name Himsagar is an amalgamation of 'Himā' (Sanskrit - Snow) and 'Sagarā' (Sanskrit - Sea) - denoting the route from snow-covered Kashmir to the meeting place of three seas - the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea - at Kanyakumari.
