Big South Fork Scenic Railway

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway is a heritage railway in Stearns, Kentucky.

There is a five mile route through lush vegetation and along mountain streams. Live music usually precedes the train's departure. The Big South Fork River and Recreation Area is the railroad's stopover point - the park contains a gift shop and snack bar with picnic shelter, walking trails and more.

The railroad is restoring a large 1944 steam locomotive. Until then, the excursions are diesel-powered.

The McCreary County Museum (admission included in train ticket) shows how the coal company towns operated and the lifestyle of their people.
