The ALP-46 is an electric locomotive built by Asea Brown Boveri (Sweden) between 1998 and 2001. Currently, only one railroad use this locomotive: New Jersey Transit (NJT). It is primarily used for the agency's Midtown Direct services to Penn Station in Manhattan.

Orders

NJT, in need to supplement its order of Bombardier "Comet V" push-pull coaches (along with the need to retire some of its "Arrow" electrical m.u. coaches) ordered 30 of the ALP-46 locomotives. The ALP-46 design, similar in appearance to Amtrak's HHP-8 locomotives for Northeast Corridor service, but with a more "boxy" appearance The order for the ALP-46, with 15 units (numbered 4500 through 4514) was delivered in 2000, while the second order was delivered in 2002. Both the ALP-46 and the ALP-44M, which it has supplemented, both have microprocessor-controlled systems and can be coupled together if needed.

Specifications

All ALP-46 locomotives are capable of producing up to 7000hp (5.2 MW), and are capable of top speeds of up to 125 mph (201 km/h). However, like the ALP-44 and ALP-44M, they are cleared for a top speed of only 100 mph (161 km/h). The ALP-44's motors draw power from overhead lines through one of the locomotive's two pantographs.
